What Makes Us Different?

There's no shortage of landscapers in this part of the world. So what makes Wild Roots Design different?

We're not here to mow lawns or design gardens with ecologically damaging species.

We don't use invasive plants—period. Many landscapers in this area still install plants like burning bush (Euonymous elatus) and Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii), which degrade ecosystems, reduce soil health, and displace native habitat. These plants are even illegal to buy or sell in some states. Instead, we design gardens that support biodiversity—the variety of all life at all levels (genes, species, and ecosystems) that work together to create a functioning, resilient environment (Doug Tallamy).

Our approach is fully organic. We focus on building the health of your garden for longterm success rather than relying on toxic synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. Healthy soils create resilient plants, which are less prone to disease and pest outbreaks. Ever wonder why your landscapers keep applying grub control treatments, only to see the problem get worse as the months and years go on? This is called the pesticide treadmill, and we don't want you to get stuck on it!

We also know how to care for plants in ways that honor their natural growth patterns. We won't shear your shrubs into unnatural growth patterns that block light and stress the plant. We understand the difference between host plants and ornamental fillers, and we prioritize designing beautiful and biological meaningful gardens.

Our work is rooted in scientific knowledge and a deep respect for the land. Margit holds an M.S. in Biological and Environmental Sciences from the University of Rhode Island and a B.S. in Ecological Economics from the University of Vermont. She's a certified URI Master Gardener and an Accredited Organic Land Care Professional through the Northeast Organic Farming Association. She brings years of experience working on the land as a cattle and flower farmer, floral designer, and landscaper in Connecticut.

Wild Roots Design exists to make a genuine difference. Our climate and local ecosystems are under immense pressure, and your yard has the potential to be part of the solution.
